Character of the village
La Garde-Freinet is the highest village of the Maures massif, and you notice it in the climate as much as in the view: it is several degrees cooler here than on the coast in August. Above the village, the spur of Fort Freinet carries ruins from the twelfth to the sixteenth centuries and troglodyte dwellings. Below stretches the cork-oak forest that kept the commune alive, along with the chestnuts. The name comes from Fraxinet, the stronghold held by corsairs out of Cordoba from 889 until their expulsion in 973.

Schools and access
A nursery and primary school in the village; secondary schooling is in the communes of the gulf. La Garde-Freinet is some twenty kilometres from Saint-Tropez along the Maures road, which places it outside the gulf in the strict sense and explains why it has kept the prices the gulf used to have. The road is fine and winding; it is a journey, not an end-of-day errand.

Art de vivre
A real village, with its square, its cafes and its year-round residents, in a massif of forest and maquis, lavender and broom. People come up for the cool, for the paths, for the chestnuts in autumn, and they buy for the same reason: it is the only village in the gulf where you can still acquire a village house without a seafront budget.
