Character of the village

Cavalaire occupies the head of a wide, sheltered bay at the foot of the Maures, between Cap Cavalaire to the west and Cap Lardier to the east. Three unbroken kilometres of sand, rocky coves to the west, and a town that lives off its beach without depending on it entirely: eight thousand residents, a fishing and pleasure harbour, a seafront you can walk end to end. It was here, on 15 August 1944, that three American divisions and the French First Armoured Division landed.

Schools and access

A nursery and a primary school in the commune, secondary schools at Cogolin and Gassin. Cavalaire is at the end of the corniche des Maures, which keeps it clear of the gulf road and its jams: you come in along the coast from Le Lavandou or inland from La Croix-Valmer. The loi littoral applies along the whole seafront, with its hundred-metre strip where nothing may be built.

Art de vivre

The bay faces due south, towards the Hyères islands, which gives the place a light and a stretch of water the rest of the gulf does not have. Fishing pointus are still in the harbour, among them the restored Tramontane. The coastal path sets off towards Cap Lardier and does not come back for several hours. It is the most family-minded of the communes we cover, and the liveliest out of season after Cogolin.

Yes. The commune has around eight thousand permanent residents and is growing, with schools, shops and a working harbour all year. It is a seaside town rather than a seasonal resort, which sets it clearly apart from the peninsula.
