Character of the village

Ramatuelle reads in two parts. First the village, set a hundred and thirty metres above the vines, its streets turning in concentric rings around the church: a defence against Barbary raids that has become a pleasure to walk. Then the sixteen kilometres of coast the commune owns, from the long bay of Pampelonne to Cap Camarat and the wild point of Cap Taillat. Between them, garrigue and vineyards classified as Côtes-de-Provence since 1946. People buy here for that double belonging: a Provençal village turned in on itself, and a seafront most of which was never built on.

Schools and access

A nursery and a primary school in the village; secondary schooling is in the neighbouring villages of the gulf. The road serving Ramatuelle climbs from Saint-Tropez on one side and from the plain on the other: a ridge road, handsome and slow, which saturates in summer like the whole peninsula. Properties at Pampelonne and l'Escalet are often reached by private tracks, which explains part of their discretion.

Art de vivre

The theatre festival, founded in 1985, takes over the open-air theatre in August, followed by jazz and classical music. The rest of the year the commune returns to farming: the harvest, the cooperative cellar and five estates. The coastal path follows Cap Camarat and Cap Taillat, both managed by the Conservatoire du littoral, which guarantees that the view from the heights will stay as it is.

What are the residential areas of Ramatuelle?

The perched village for older houses, the Pampelonne side for large properties under the pines, l'Escalet and Cap Camarat for a wilder seafront, and the wine plain for farmhouses surrounded by vines. Each area has its own market and its own use: the village is lived in year round, the coast is more seasonal.
