Character of the village

Grimaud is two villages in one commune. Above, the eleventh-century castrum and its listed ruins, the rue des Templiers with its arcades, the pont des Fées that brought water from three kilometres away. Below, on former marshland, Port Grimaud: the lakeside town drawn by François Spoerry and built from 1966, twelve kilometres of quay, squares, a church, and the principle that made it famous, one house, one mooring, no car. Between them the hamlets of Beauvallon and Val-de-Gilly, and the beach.

Schools and access

Two primary schools in the commune, the secondary school in neighbouring Cogolin. Grimaud occupies the head of the gulf, which makes it the crossing point between the two shores: an advantage for getting about most of the year and a drawback in August. Port Grimaud has its own logic of access, by water as much as by road, and the seasonal boat shuttles reach Saint-Tropez without using the gulf road.

Art de vivre

The contrast is the charm: medieval lanes and their chapels on one side, canals and fishing boats moored at the door on the other. The Beauvallon golf course, laid out in the early twentieth century, and the seaside villas of the same period are a reminder that tourism here is old, half a century older than on the peninsula. Living here year round is easier than in Saint-Tropez.

What is the difference between Grimaud and Port Grimaud?

They are two districts of the same commune, a few kilometres and nine centuries apart. The village is medieval, perched, facing inland. Port Grimaud is an architect's creation of the nineteen sixties, built on the water, where most houses have their own mooring. The two markets have neither the same buyers nor the same uses.
