Sainte-Maxime holds the northern shore of the gulf and looks at Saint-Tropez across the water. That is a position, not a consolation: the shore faces due south, the Maures massif cuts the mistral at its back, and the town keeps the sun all day where the peninsula loses it early behind its hills. Schools and access

Three nurseries, two primary schools and two secondary schools: the most complete school provision in the gulf. The RD 559 joins the A8 motorway at the Le Muy exit, which puts Sainte-Maxime closer to fast access than the peninsula. A boat shuttle links the harbour to Saint-Tropez: fifteen minutes on the water rather than an hour on the road in August, which changes how you live here.

The town is lived on foot, along the seafront between the harbour and la Nartelle. The sixteenth-century Tour Carrée, now the museum, holds the old quarter.
